How do you find a good dietitian

and the best nutrition advice?

We realized that finding good nutrition advice, let alone the best Dietitian in Halifax, was a more challenging task than we expected.

It seems like everyone claims to be the best, or an expert in nutrition these days. But you wouldn’t ask just anyone to perform surgery on you, or re-wire the electricity in your house (I wouldn’t come to a Registered Dietitian for these tasks either). So why would you get important nutrition information from a friend or a random person you found on the internet?

Let me tell you about Registered Dietitians, Halifax.

A Registered Dietitian is a regulated health professional, extensively trained in nutrition both on the job and through accredited university and internship programs. Dietitians report to a provincial regulatory body, which means they’re held accountable to the highest standards of education and ethics. Registered Dietitians look beyond fads and gimmicks to deliver reliable, evidenced-based recommendations and work with you to develop an individualized plan to help you meet your goals.

who is the best dietitian for you?

While all Registered Dietitians have similar backgrounds when it comes to education (Bachelor or Master of Science, rigorous internship program and national certification exam), the work experience can vary greatly.

Dietitians work in hospitals, schools, clinics, private practice and also in the government, pushing national and provincial policies. Dietitians can also specialize in areas like sports nutrition, diabetes management, weight management, digestive issues, or pediatric nutrition.

A problem we face in Halifax, even Nova Scotia, is that Registered Dietitians in many of these roles, especially in the hospitals, have very long wait times. Another factor to consider in finding the right Dietitian.

what kind of nutrition help do you need?

The first thing to ask yourself is, what do YOU need? Look for a dietitian with the right experience to meet your needs.

Nutrition for Athletes – Sports Dietitian

Looking to enhance your sport performance? Look for a dietitian with experience working with athletes, or trained specifically in sports nutrition.

Managing Diabetes – Certified Diabetes Educator

Need help managing diabetes or another chronic condition? A Certified Diabetes Educator, or someone with a strong background in chronic disease management/ prevention might be your best bet.

Nutrition for Weight Loss – Certified Diabetes Educator

Looking to meet your weight loss goals? Find a dietitian that specializes in weight management and uses an approach that fits with your lifestyle.

Email or phone the dietitian ahead of time to ask questions and to get a sense of their style. This will help you determine if they will be the right fit for you.

ask about us.

Second, talk to people you know. If you know someone that’s currently working with a dietitian, or has in the past, pick their brain about their experience, and their dietitian’s approach and style.

Most of our clients come from referrals. A client telling friends or family about their experience with one of our Registered Dietitians, or doctors from all around Halifax sending their clients our way.

If you don’t know anyone working with a dietitian, ask a health or fitness professional you trust if there’s anyone they recommend and work with often. The people you ask may not know who the best Dietitian in Halifax is (we would argue there are many bests!), but they’re likely to tell you about their experiences.

where are all the Dietitians at?

OK, it’s starting to sound like we’re talking about the best kept secret in Halifax.

Don’t forget to look at location and availability. You want to make sure that you’ll have access to your dietitian at times that work for you.

Does the dietitian offer telephone or online appointments? Where is their office located? If the Registered Dietitian is located in Dartmouth and you’re in Halifax, it might not be the best fit. Convenience is going to be key to making sure you attend your appointments, which will be a huge help in keeping things on track. The easier it is, the more likely you are to do it.

Making Nutrition easy.

We said it earlier, they key to success with nutrition changes is making sure that the changes you’re trying to make are easy. Convenience is key. Remember, many private health plans in Nova Scotia now cover dietitian services. Check with your health insurance provider to see if you have coverage. Now is a great time to book an appointment before your benefits run out for the year!

beware of gimmicks!

Make sure your dietitian isn’t pushing some crazy diet, or sketchy supplements. While this is more likely to happen with a nutritionist or naturopath than with a credentialed dietitian, it can still occur. If this is happening, spoiler alert – they aren’t the best!

You want to make sure you’re working with someone who’s going to give you evidence-based advice that’s individualized to your needs, and not someone who’s pushing something that has no evidence behind it and could potentially be dangerous.

At the end of the day, it’s important to do your homework when selecting a dietitian. You want to make sure that you are finding the right fit for you. There are a variety of specializations out there, so keep that in mind when you are looking for help with something specific, i.e. sports nutrition.
