Do I Want a Sport Massage?

Well, that depends. Do you want to perform to the best of your ability?

High Performance is often associated with the elite, or the best of the best. Whether it be in sport, academics, or everyday life, High Performance is something we should start thinking about on an individual basis and something we should be striving for as often as we can.

Our peak physical (and mental) health can be brought closer with the right kind of massage therapy. At
this exciting time in the 2020 CrossFit Open, I want to give you the low-down on how the right RMT and
the right massage can be a key that helps unlock your maximum potential. For the next 5 weeks, I want
to help you do that, I’ll tell you how at the end of this article!

How does Sport Massage Therapy help?

Sport Massage Therapy is used to enhance your preparation for the physical and mental demands of
competition – whatever it may be.

For us at OnSide, and especially those who have taken part in the CrossFit Open before, it’s a pretty
intense workout not only physically but also mentally. Sometimes it’s not because of the workout itself
but the level of intensity we strive to work at. There is something about putting our name out there for
the world to see that makes us push that much harder. If our preparation and recovery isn’t right, it can
take a physical toll on our body.

Sport Massage Therapy can help reduce the strain and discomfort of training, it can reduce the chance
of potential injury, and most importantly, it can increase your overall feeling or alertness and well-being.
Of course there are also measurable benefits like increasing range of motion, decreasing recovery time,
and the feeling of freedom in our joints.

OK. Let’s talk phases and timing

There are different phases and timing of sport massage that vary depending on how close you are to
the event. Let’s use the CrossFit Open since it’s relevant right now. For us at Onside, this event happens
every Friday from Oct 11 to Nov 8 from 4:30pm to about 7:30pm.

Pre-Event

1-2 Days Before. A Massage treatment should be no longer than one hour. This can include anything
from stretching to specific techniques. This treatment acts as a warm-up massage to loosen up tight
muscles and prepare for a big performance. This isn’t necessarily a relaxing massage, but it doesn’t
focus on rehabilitating a specific injury or area.

Within 1 hour of event. This sport massage therapy session should start around 20-30 minutes before the event. The duration is usually only 5 – 20 minutes in length, this session is designed to increase circulation, soften any adhesions, help with limited range of motion issues, and decrease muscle spasms (which can lead to serious pain). In addition to all these benefits, this treatment can also help increase speed, power and endurance. Side note when I’m available – I’ll be doing these on Friday Nights at OnSide during the open where you can try it out for free. Find out if this session can help you feel better during your workouts.

We all know how important post workout is when you’re trying to recover quickly.

Post-Event

Between 30 min and 6 hours after event. This session helps with the recovery process and can help
reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Basically, this session helps reduce how tight and sore
we are after a hard workout. The focus in this session is not therapeutic, usually we’re trying to flush out the muscles. This is a bit of a softer massage and can help promote circulation and in-turn, flexibility.

Between 6 hours and 2 days after the event. This massage is going to be more therapeutic, focusing on your injuries or any aches and pains you may be having issues with. The duration here can be anywhere from 30 – 90 minutes.

Give Sport Massage Therapy a Try!

If you want to give Sport Massage Therapy a try before or after a workout, I have good news!

Most Friday nights during the 2020 CrossFit Open, I’ll be giving short pre workout treatments (5-20mins)
AND if you want to try an actual session, during the next 4 weeks I’ll be giving OnSide members who
have signed up for the open 15% off any Sport Massage Therapy session. Let me know if you notice an
improvement in your workout performance!
