Which CrossFit Gym is for you?

Here’s how we answer that question…

That’s a common question, searched in just about any city that has a CrossFit gym. This common question has a complicated answer though. What makes a good CrossFit gym? What makes it the “best” gym in the city? That’s a very personal answer and unique to each individual person. Before you can ask “what’s the best CrossFit gym in the city?” you have to ask yourself, “What am I looking for in a CrossFit gym?” There are a few key factors to consider what the best CrossFit gym is for YOU.

COMMUNITY

Unlike a Goodlife-style gym, CrossFit gyms are significantly more tight-knit. The scheduled classes make it easier to connect with your fellow gym goers and for you to become a part of the gym’s community. The key here is, what kind of community are you looking for? Are you a hardcore CrossFitter, looking to compete like the CrossFit Games athletes? Maybe you’re a competitive runner looking to supplement your training. Or are you a weekend warrior that is just looking to stay in shape? Regardless of what you are looking for, it’s important to consider this when choosing a gym, as finding that right community for you is likely going to be the biggest reason you stick with the gym you choose. Alternatively, if you don’t enjoy the community, it won’t matter how convenient the location is, or how good the coaching staff is: you won’t want to stay.

COACHING

Right alongside the importance of finding the right community, is finding a coaching staff that is not only qualified, but capable of getting the most out of YOU. What works for you may not work for someone else and vice versa. So, when shopping around for the right CrossFit gym, it’s important that you find coaches that will help you succeed and keep you motivated. That may mean trying out a few gyms before you commit to one. You don’t want to be signing up for a year long contract at a gym that has coaches that can’t help you succeed. So, get out there and try a few gyms out.

Location

Perhaps, at least initially, one of the biggest deciding factors when choosing a gym is its location. People live busy lives, so an extra 5 minutes here or 10 minutes there can make a big difference at the end of the day. While this is an important factor, generally the gym’s community and coaching staff will outweigh the decision to choose a gym based on location. People will drive a bit farther for a community that fits their personality and a coaching staff that they connect with.

With that being said, there are CrossFit gyms in all corners of the HRM. From CrossFit Bardown in Hammonds Plains, to Blended Athletics in Dartmouth, Crossfit Kinetics in downtown Halifax and OnSide Performance Centre in the back of Bayers Lake. There are certainly locations to suit the needs of everyone.

You’ll notice that there is no mention of cost. There is a reason for this. When it comes to CrossFit in Halifax, the prices across the board are relatively the same. Different gyms will charge a bit more or a bit less, but for the most part, all of the prices are in line with one another. So your cost for CrossFit is going to range between $125 and $150 + tax per month. As part of these membership costs, you’ll have access to top notch facilities, with smaller classes that allow for people to get more individual coaching. Each gym will offer typical CrossFit classes along with a variety of extras, so it’s important to take these into account as well. At OnSide Performance Centre these extras include massage, gymnastics, olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, and aerobic capacity. Just as with the factors mentioned earlier, the extra services offered at a facility are important to consider when choosing a CrossFit gym.

So you see, when you Google, “What is the best CrossFit gym in Halifax?” Google can’t answer that for you, because Google doesn’t know you. Understanding what you want in a gym is how you’ll be able to answer that question for yourself. Do your research. Try classes out at different CrossFit gyms and make sure that you find the right fit for you.
